Linen Material Care Guide
Linen, renowned as the world’s strongest natural fiber, boasts exceptional durability and resistance to abrasion, ensuring your favorite linen pieces endure for years to come. Proper care is paramount to prolonging the life and beauty of your linens. Here are essential guidelines to maintain the softness and smoothness of your linens through countless washes:
Machine Washing:
- Wash linen at 40°C / 100 °F. For tough stains, increase the temperature up to 60 °C / 140 °F occasionally, but avoid high temperatures to prevent shrinkage.
- Launder linen separately from other fabrics and colors to prevent color bleeding.
- Opt for the highest water level setting on your washing machine as linen is highly absorbent.
- For polyester-filled garments, limit washing temperature to a maximum of 40°C / 100 °F.
Hand Washing:
- Ideal for delicate linen fabrics prone to damage in the washing machine.
- Use a gentle swishing motion while hand-washing linen clothing, avoiding wringing, twisting, or scrubbing.
- Hand wash linens for items with light soil.
Stain Cleaning:
- Address stains promptly to prevent them from setting.
- Use gentle cleaning methods to avoid damaging the fabric. Refer to specific stain removal techniques for linen in our blog.
Detergent:
- Choose soft, neutral detergents without bleach additives.
- Dilute detergent with water before adding to the wash or add it as the wash tub fills.
- Ensure thorough rinsing to remove all detergent residue.
Bleaching:
- Reserve bleaching for white linen pieces only, avoiding colored items.
- Use oxygen-based bleaching agents for optimal results.
Shrinkage:
- Our washed linen production minimizes shrinkage compared to non-washed linen.
- Pre-shrunk items typically experience minimal shrinkage of 3 percent or less.
- Avoid hot washing or drying settings, as they are likely to cause shrinkage.
Drying:
- Linen can be tumble dried on low temperature, hung, or laid flat to dry on a white towel.
- Remove linen from the dryer while slightly damp and finish drying by hanging or laying flat.
- Sun drying white linen helps retain its freshness and brightness.
- Overdrying weakens fibers, leading to shrinkage and pilling. Allow items to retain natural moisture content by avoiding overdrying.
Ironing:
- Iron linen while slightly damp using medium to high temperatures and steam.
- Iron on the reverse side to prevent shine and preserve texture.
- Achieve a smooth finish by folding or pressing with an iron.
- Embrace the natural, slightly crinkled look of linen by skipping ironing if desired.
By adhering to these care instructions, you’ll ensure that your linen items maintain their luxurious texture and appearance, providing enjoyment for years to come.
Note: Always check the care label on your linen items for specific instructions.
